Description

Earn $12/hour as a Community Service Federal Work Study (CSFWS) at Shaver`s Creek! Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center—Penn State’s Outdoor Education Field Lab and Nature Center—is seeking work study positions to help collect and organize data to contribute to on-going citizen science projects like Project Feederwatch, iNaturalist, and Monarch butterfly tagging. Established in 1976, Shaver’s Creek is an environmental education field laboratory seeking to enhance the quality of life of our local and global community by providing exemplary outdoor learning opportunities. Administered by Penn State Outreach and Online Education, the Center functions as a University field campus providing facilities and programming that meet the education and research needs of many academic disciplines. The Center is located within Penn State’s 7,000 acre Stone Valley Forest, 13 miles south of State College, so transportation will be needed to get there. We offer summer camps, environmental education programs, natural/cultural history exhibits, live amphibians and reptiles, hiking trails, native gardens and more to the public. Our raptor aviary is one of the few federally and state licensed raptor facilities in Pennsylvania providing perpetual care and housing for eagles, falcons, hawks, vultures, and owls. Over the last three years, the Center has undergone a significant facility expansion and renovation. Additional opportunities include helping with Shaver’s Creek social media platforms, developing/updating interpretive displays and writing blog entries about the citizen science projects. Work hours can generally be tailored to student schedules any day of the week (including weekends) between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
