The Penn State Abington MakerSpace seeks qualified candidates for the position of MakerSpace Monitor, reporting to the MakerSpace Coordinator. The ideal candidate for this position is an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria: full-time student status at Penn State Abington with a preferred minimum of 60 credits (junior standing), although with demonstration of exceptional skill sets as outlined below, a minimum of 30 credits (sophomore standing) will be considered; GPA of 2.5 or above; demonstrable self-direction, leadership, organization, and/or interaction skills through a record of prior employment and/or academic achievement. Mandatory possession of one or more of the following digital skills: 3D modeling proficiency in Maya, 3DMax, Blender, SketchUp, Fusion 360, Inventor, and/or Solidworks; vector graphics proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and/or Inkscape; proficiency with WordPress content management system. Mandatory possession of one or more of the following shop skills: demonstrable proficiency with safe operation of shop equipment including one or more of the following: table saw, miter saw, band saw, belt/disc sander and/or drill press; experience with one or more of the following: 3D printing, vinyl cutting, CNC routing, and/or laser engraving. Prior experience and certified safety training as a MakerSpace client is preferred but not required. Your foundation in both digital and shop skills will be enhanced with “see one, do one, teach one” training for all equipment. Safety protocols conforming to PSU Office of Environmental Health and Safety requirements and OSHA regulations will be a part of this training. Preference will be given to candidates who can document prior safety certification at PSU or equivalent at another institution. Preference will also be given to candidates who develop the position as an internship with a faculty adviser. The Coordinator will function as your site supervisor. The duties of the position include: being available and dedicated to scheduled work hours; maintaining order and cleanliness in the MakerSpace; reinforce MakerSpace policies and procedures; train and maintain records for certification of clientele for general shop and equipment-specific safety; based on the hazard level of tool. Ensure a safe working environment at all times: confirm certified safety training status of client prior to using reserved equipment; confirm authorized level of monitoring for tool is adhered to; assist clientele who are using equipment as necessary; monitor and record reservations and use of equipment; alert Coordinator of any issues (malfunctioning equipment, supply inventory, etc.); check reservation status on any tool or workstation that must go offline due to any issue, and contact the client to reschedule; report any safety incident, major or minor, to Coordinator, and assist in confirming accuracy of any incident report filed by Coordinator; assist with MakerSpace special events as needed. Available hours are negotiable based on schedule of candidate and Coordinator. Thirty to forty hours of public availability will be distributed among monitors based on candidate availability and current staffing needs. Students may not work for more than twenty hours per week and may not work for more than one department at the College. The search will remain open until all positions are filled. Work-study qualified students are encouraged to apply. Compensation is the standard campus rate of $9.50 per hour.
