Description

Earn $12/hour! The Community Service FWS - Animal Caretaker and Educator Work-Study position supports the daily operations of the Animal Care Program at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, Penn State’s Outdoor Education Field Lab and Nature Center. Located 12 miles from University Park in Penn State’s 7,000 acre Stone Valley Forest, the center is home to over three dozen native amphibians, reptiles, and raptors. The Animal Caretaker and Educator will engage in husbandry tasks such as cleaning, water quality maintenance, preparing food, and providing environmental enrichment. In this position, the students will have the opportunity to learn and apply positive reinforcement training techniques with the resident animals. As Shaver’s Creek is open to the public daily, welcoming and educating visitors is an important duty. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual that has a strong interest in an animal care career. This position involves a lot of physical work (stooping, lifting, etc.) in outdoor conditions year round. Selected candidates may work up to 20 hours per week and regular weekend work will be required. In addition to the requirements of the CSFWS Program, selected candidates must purchase a Pennsylvania Fishing License and complete all mandated IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) training prior to beginning work at Shaver’s Creek.
