This position will be working towards developing plant tissue culture based methods of maintaining insects that feed on plants. In particular, we are starting with whitefly (which is a phloem feeder) but would like to see if we can adapt these methods to generate a scalable method to generate the biocontrol beetle for the woolly adelgid. In this position you will be taught basic plant tissue culture methods that include sterile work in biohoods, media preparation, tissue sterilization, contamination testing. There will also be microscopy work and considerable training in biosafety and biocontainment. This is open to any student of any major with an interest in plants and insects.
