The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at Penn State Abington is developing a Peer Mentoring Program to provide new matriculating students with direction, guidance and advice as it concerns student driven initiatives, operations, and programs. We are seeking Peer Mentors to staff this program. Engaging and supporting students constitutes the primary responsibility of the Peer Mentor. Secondary responsibilities include advising and serving as an active participant in student retention, engagement, and success at Abington. The Peer Mentor will serve as an advocate and champion for all undergraduate students as they successfully transition in to the Abington community. Toward achieving these responsibilities, Peer Mentors will work with the ODEI staff as well as key Student Affairs staff on various “diversity” focused projects and initiatives with the goal of improving student self-efficacy, engagement and leadership skills and to increase academic performance, personal effectiveness and professional readiness. The responsibilities will be divided thusly: 50% generally engage students serving as a point of support and reference at Abington. 20% advise students as necessary. 15% work within Student Affairs and with other Abington stakeholders to improve the student transition and experience at the College. This may include, participation in student tutoring, connect students with academic and professional opportunities, providing insight to the “hidden curriculum.” 10% working in the ODEI on initiatives that focus on success for all students specifically as it concerns addressing outcomes gaps among under-served/recognized student populations (those minoritized, women, first-generation, rural, socio-economically disadvantaged, LGBTQQIA, etc.) 5% other opportunities as they arise.
